ISTANBUL, April 18 (Xinhua) -- Istanbul Airport has reached a "milestone" with the launch of simultaneous operations on three fully independent runways, significantly enhancing aviation efficiency in the region, according to authorities.

The system, which enables simultaneous takeoffs and landings, was put into operation at 10:00 a.m. local time (0700 GMT) on Thursday. With this system, Istanbul Airport became the first in Europe and the second in the world after the United States to operate with three runways, the semi-official Anadolu Agency reported.

Speaking at the launch ceremony, Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu highlighted the advanced technology behind the new system, which involves "cutting-edge radar systems, precision navigation aids, and robust air traffic control protocols."

The system also includes automated structures designed to predict flight paths and manage traffic flow, playing a crucial role in preventing runway incursions and ensuring safe, efficient operations, he added.

A commercial pilot, who requested anonymity, emphasized that the new system is expected to help reduce carbon emissions. "This will improve operational efficiency, make aviation more environmentally sustainable, and enhance customer satisfaction," the pilot told Xinhua.

As a major regional aviation hub, Istanbul Airport handled 517,284 flights and over 80 million passengers in the past year, the airport's press office told Xinhua, adding it served 110 airlines and added 27 new routes in 2024, bringing the total number of destinations to 321. ■
